This is Painting of the Seven Sages of the Bamboo Grove by Tang Yin (Tang Bohu) of the Ming Dynasty. The painting depicts a grand scene of literati gathering. Several scholars in loose robes with wide sleeves are shown in various leisurely poses: some sit around a chessboard, fully absorbed in the crisscrossing black and white chess pieces as they play; others lean against rocks, engaging in casual and profound conversations with relaxed expressions—their flowing robes fully embody the elegant demeanor of literati from the Wei and Jin dynasties, while also bearing the steady and unrestrained style characteristic of Tang Yin’s brushwork. The scholars’ expressions and mannerisms are exquisitely detailed: the chess players frown in deep concentration, the onlookers wear gentle, leisurely smiles, and the conversing scholars make vivid hand gestures, as if letting their philosophical thoughts and witty remarks flow through their fingertips. In the background, mountains and rocks are rendered with light ink wash using the "cun" (texturing) technique; several tall, slender bamboos stand gracefully, their leaves outlined with fine brushstrokes in a balanced arrangement of density and sparseness. This adds an air of tranquility and elegance, perfectly aligning with the artistic conception of the "bamboo grove" (the iconic setting associated with the Seven Sages).
